Lean FIRE

Find your FI number targeting a leaner post-FI lifestyle.

ⓘ How this works

Lean FIRE is a version of "Financial Independence, Retire Early" where you plan to live on a smaller, leaner budget after retiring — spending less than you do today — which means you need a smaller total savings target to become financially independent. This calculator estimates that reduced FI number and how many years it might take to reach it.

Lean financial independence

Lean FI target (today’s money)
₹1.05 Cr

The corpus you'd need today so that withdrawing your LEAN monthly expenses (the lean factor × today's spend), at the withdrawal rate you set, never runs it down.

Estimated corpus at FI date
₹1.33 Cr

The same target in 4-years-from-now rupees, after 6% yearly inflation. This is the number your investments actually have to reach.

That's 30% less than the ₹1.5 Cr you'd need for standard FIRE — because you're planning to live on a smaller budget after retiring, not because your investments grow any differently.

How these numbers are built
FI target = ₹35,000/month × 12 ÷ 4% initial withdrawal rate.
At 6% inflation, ₹35,000/month today is expected to cost about ₹44,187/month when you reach FI.
Expected return 12% is nominal. After 6% inflation that is roughly 5.7% real growth in purchasing power. These are assumptions, not guaranteed returns.

Risk note · Retirement projections compound small assumption changes over decades: a 1% difference in return or inflation can move the outcome by lakhs or crores. Markets are volatile, inflation is uncertain, and tax rules change. Treat these numbers as a planning range, revisit them yearly, and keep a safety margin.
