Coast FIRE

See if you already have enough invested that you can stop actively saving for retirement.

ⓘ How this works

Coast FIRE is the point where your current investments alone — with zero further contributions — will grow through compounding to your full retirement number by your target retirement age. Once you've reached it, you no longer need to actively save for retirement; you just need to cover today's living expenses, and your existing money does the rest. This is different from FIRE Planner, which assumes you keep contributing — Coast FIRE checks whether you could stop contributing right now.

Coast FIRE

Not coasting yet
Based on reaching your number in 20 years
Amount needed today to coast (today’s money)
₹64.6L
Coast FIRE number (invest today)₹64.6L
Full FI number (at retirement)₹5.77 Cr
At your retirement date's prices (6% inflation) — ₹1.8 Cr in today's money.
The gap
You'd need ₹34.6L more invested today, as a lump sum, to be able to stop actively saving for retirement.
If you stopped contributing today, your current wealth alone would grow to ₹2.68 Cr by then — ₹3.09 Cr short of your ₹5.77 Cr target.
Assumptions behind these numbers
Expected return 11% is nominal — after 6% inflation that is roughly 4.7% real growth in purchasing power. These are assumptions, not guaranteed returns — markets vary year to year.
The Coast FIRE number (₹64.6L) is what must be invested today and left untouched for 20 years at that return to reach the FI number — any year of lower returns pushes the date out.

Risk note · Retirement projections compound small assumption changes over decades: a 1% difference in return or inflation can move the outcome by lakhs or crores. Markets are volatile, inflation is uncertain, and tax rules change. Treat these numbers as a planning range, revisit them yearly, and keep a safety margin.
